» Understanding Relationships: A Mystic's Journal Entry

This Journal Entry is a series of emails I had with three of my students. Since the questions asked are universal ones, I thought to include them here....

K: What is the Higher Compassion, and how do we get there?

LC: We cultivate the Higher Compassion for someone by simply saying that all beings deserve our compassion merely because they are in the physical body and in the ego - and therefore suffer. That we have all forgotten that we are the Radiant soul. As long as this practice applies to all beings you are protected, i.e. you will not be standing in personal compassion which can flip to its opposite, negative emotion.

This Higher Compassion sometimes means saying "no" or "stop" - because the Higher Compassion does not want others to harm themselves or others - and if someone is harming others, then they are also harming themselves. Therefore, we would say that it is true compassion to stop someone's negative or harmful behavior - for their sake and for the sake of others.

The Higher Love we cannot ourselves produce - nor the Higher Compassion. We ask (God) that this Higher Love and Compassion fill and surround us, and then radiate from us to all sentient beings. Or you can ask God to send the Divine Love & Compassion to others, we do not need to be the intermediary. What helps me always the most is remembering that I am the soul, that all others are the soul, that we are all that Divine Radiant Light. In any case, it is not wise to come from either personal sympathy or from personal compassion or love for another being. In the end, it is always best to feel and send the Higher Love and Compassion, and for many reasons. For one: they are stronger and deeper than any personal emotion, and for two: they are entirely Pure.

To be more clear: the danger of the personal emotions of sympathy, empathy, compassion, love - is that they can easily flip to their negative opposites - fear, anger, hatred, jealousy etc. A good test: if you become angry with someone - then you are not standing in the Higher Love and Compassion.

S: Please help me find a way to disconnect from my emotions of revenge. Please help me find a way to let go of these emotions from the "Ego" and allow Karma to take justice.

LC: These people are sunk, mired in the ego, and for that reason alone deserve your Compassion. Basically, they are driving themselves crazy, and as a result of their thoughts and actions and harmful behavior they can never have happy, peaceful lives. For that reason alone, they deserve our compassion. And you really do not want to join them there, in the ego - it will only bring you more pain and suffering.

Exercise: Try to turn yourself to the Divine Radiant Light of the soul, turn them to that Light of the soul - and mentally turn the entire situation to the Divine Light it truly IS. The substratum of our universe is the Divine Light, and that is Truth - the rest is just appearance. This exercise also brings healing to you and to the situation - and to the world in general. And the world truly needs help now. The biggest Gift we can bring to the world is to radiate Light and do our own spiritual practices. Thank you for your honesty and for your love - and for your deep devotion to the spiritual Path.

R: I have been doing a new exercise, to think and act as though I only had six months to live. It seems to be helping me. I want to be an outgoing person who has fun with everybody and spreads light to everyone...That is my vision!

LC: And a Beautiful and Valuable Vision it is ... In all, just an amazing, mature and spiritual outlook and series of reflections. And a wonderful spiritual exercise, to think and act as though you only had six more months to live (I just gave that exercise (again) to my meditation class last week...) Thank you for your honesty and for your hard work on the Path.

R: But I must admit that I'm still a coward when it comes to people.

LC: Better keep saying your new mantra ("I am courageous and comfortable with people")! Although I very much liked this: "But the more time I spend outside, I feel it will eventually click... After all, there is nothing wrong with me, nothing at all.... It's just a discomfort." Still, keep working on changing your self-image... and good job, excellent job on how far you have already come! Remember: they are only thoughts and emotions, and thoughts can be changed. And when the thoughts change, the emotions and actions follow....

Who we meet and attract very much depends on the work we have done on ourselves, and how we arrange and live our lives here on earth, the decisions we have made and the decisions we make each day. That is why, often it is best to wait between relationships - or we tend to attract the same old thing and the same old problems....

R: So by living a life that is consistent with my believed to be purpose, by acting in accordance with that purpose, I will meet people who are right for me? People who can harmonize with my aims in life?!... That is as best as I can grasp right now.

LC: Yes, in part. But there is also the breadth and scope of our life, our horizons - the depth to our character and thought - our moral/ethical and spiritual development - the Light we bring, or the Darkness - our maturity, emotional/mental/spiritual... We tend to attract people with a similar level of Light.

R: So we should perform actions which complement our chosen purpose in life, and in doing so, we will find someone on a similar wavelength... I think, I got it.

LC: Yes, more or less ... But it is not just actions: it is also our thoughts and aspirations, our achievements inner and outer, our responses to life ... and to what extent we are standing in True Life.

There is more, if you are interested. Relationships, especially our deep and profound ones, are also often (if not always) predestined, and/or decided on before we even incarnate, agreed on by both people.... You have to realize that our lives on earth are based on free will - but certain decisions and goals were set before we came to earth in a physical body.

That is one reason, in terms of our deep relationships - that we must honor and cherish them. Whether they are easy or difficult, beautiful or ugly. For whatever reason the person standing before us is the one we chose for that particular experience, that particular Lesson.
