Someone Worth Accepting Now (SWAN) was creaed in 2004 to advocate, promote changes in legislation, to provide for the needs of the abused and because of some of the staggering statistics. One in three women are victims of domestic violence in their lifetime. Domestic violence is the single major cause of injury to women, exceeding rapes, muggings and auto accidents combined.
In its initial stages, SWAN assisted families by providing food, clothing, furniture and utilities. SWAN still assists with these basic necessities and also operates weekly support groups, lay counseling and mentoring to support victims and survivors of abuse.
Two years ago, we opened The Butterfly House. A home for women and their children to live in temporarily while achieving self-sufficiency. The Butterfly House provides women a home where they can heal from the trauma they have experienced, and learn healthy communication skills and lifestyles for them and for their children. Since Butterfly House has opened, we have provided housing for more than 40 women and 80 children who have lived in the home while providing all their basic needs. SWAN operates fully on volunteers on very level without any salaries or paid staff. All donations go directly to those in need.
SWAN believes in change through realationships with the women where they are not just a number or statistic, and work individually with them on setting goals and acheiving them to get to the next step in thier life including healing, finances, housing, support groups and self sufficiency.
