» Death Penalty & More
Billie K. Fidlin
Posted February 10, 2012 by Billie K. Fidlin in Native American Spirituality
Most Christian denominations believe that the barbaric practice of the death penalty should be abolished. Met with 4 death penalty lawyers yesterday on a variety of subjects in terms of clemency hearings, AZ state government work in this area & how we as faith leaders can respond. One fact that surfaced - Utah has approx. 8 people on death row. Arizona - approx. 130. Utah - terrible, heinous crimes; Arizona - you can be convicted and sentenced to death even if it wasn't you who killed someone else. And Gov. Brewer has yet to take into consideration pleas for a change to life sentences FROM THE CLEMENCY BOARD. She has the power to overrule them, and she does. Why is it that I live here again ???

And another note - I have received the Tucson school district banned books by Native authors and have been reading them. They are wonderful. Need to track down the REASONING behind the bans. Once has foul language in abundance so I could see that - but didn't they know that when the book was approved in the first place? Everyone on the planet interested in things American Indian should order Rethinking Columbus. Its brilliant. Happy Friday folks.

Death penalty is abolished here in New Mexico and frankly I could either way about it. I see your point but I also take into fact other people's point as well.

Here in Texas, we believe in the death penalty but we make sure all the bases are covered. We have our slew or problems and some people are just well...somehow jail would make them worst and they can be crafty putting up a facade of "oh I'm cool with my life" then as soon as they walk out, they cause more horrible problems.

In Europe we don't have the death penalty but we have heinous crimes that seem like they aren't human beings. So I can't really have an opinion on that.

I think you should factor in that probably have a more complex imprisonment system than us here in the US.

I guess it's probably the difference of European and American mentality and culture.
