With the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan there has been an increased awareness of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder developing in many of our military heroes. In some cases trained service dogs are being used to ease their symptoms of PTSD. In the winter of 2010, after researching the limited availability of PTSD service dogs in Arizona for our veterans, Soldiers Best Friend was formed.
Once the veteran is accepted into the program, they will be paired with a dog adopted from a local shelter or with a dog already owned by the vet. Training will be 2 days a week for up to 8 months both in private and in groups. When a trainee and their dog are close to graduating they will be asked to mentor incoming trainees to help them transition into our program. Once the service dog is fully trained in individual tasks and general obedience it will be officially certified as a service dog and the trainee will be graduated. We are currently in Phoenix, Prescott, Tempe and Sierra Vista. All placement and training Versace at no cost to the veteran.
Our military guys and gals are finding comfort befriending stray dogs and puppies in Afghanistan and Iraq as well. Dogs are playing a big role at home and while they are deployed.
It costs approximately 2500 dollars to train one veteran and dog.
