The recent decision in California that declares Proposition 8 unconstitutional (in a ruling quite specific to California), brings back to the conversation the issue of gay marriage.
Currently, 8 states now allow gay marriage: California (if Prop 8 remains unconstitutional), Connecticut, Iowa, Vermont, New Hampshire, New York, Massechusetts, Washington state, and Washington D.C.
Speaking with gay members of this community, it is important to note that not all GLBT people believe or want the same thing regarding marriage rights and terminology. Civil unions and domestic partnerships are adequate for some. Others think that equating their relationships with heterosexual marriage is something to be avoided. The majority of those in the GLBT group, it seems, do believe that full equality under civil law will only be achieved by using the term "marriage" as well as receiving 100% of its rights.
