Christian Science

Christian Science is a Christian faith based on the words and works of Christ Jesus. The divine Principle in Christian Science is an all-loving, powerful, understanding and knowable God, infinitely good and available to all mankind.

The religion was founded by Mary Baker Eddy for the purpose of “re-instating primitive Christianity and its lost element of healing”. While practical, spiritual healing of physical and other conditions is integral to its practice, the realization of every individual’s spiritual, sinless nature and each one’s inseparable relation to God is a natural outcome of its study and daily application. Our study is with the impersonal pastor consisting of the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mrs. Eddy, which illumines the original, inspired meaning of the holy scriptures. Christian Science is open to all throughout the world.

Christian Science is a religion that is based on the “inspired Word” of the entire Bible, follows Christ Jesus’ example and worships one supreme, infinite God, who is understood to be universal good, all-present, all-powerful, divine love and intelligence, and all-harmonious.

This divine Science of the Christ, which Jesus demonstrated throughout his healing ministry, is a continual discovery about God and His spiritual laws. It is Christian because it follows the words and works of Christ Jesus as teacher and “way-shower.” It is Science because it is based on divine laws, which are as repeatable and as provable today as in Jesus’ time. Christian Scientists embrace the opportunity—as Jesus and other Biblical figures taught —to put that better understanding of God into practical use in one’s life by healing sin as well as sickness through prayer alone.

Mary Baker Eddy discovered the spiritual laws of divine healing that were behind Christ Jesus’ healing work (beginning in 1866), and named this discovery Christian Science. More than a decade later, she founded the Church of Christ, Scientist. First published in 1875, Mrs. Eddy’s book, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, completely explains Christian Science, and, as its name implies, aids in illuminating the Bible’s spiritual messages.

Christian Science is NOT:
Scientology; New Thought; mental manipulation; will power; positive thinking; the human mind over matter; faith without an understanding of God; a random miracle; hypnotism; a mere pleading with God for healing; a mere acceptance of “God’s will” (for the experience of suffering and death would never be considered God’s will or sent by God, since God is divine Love and the “sustaining infinite.”
